The challenges that decorating can present definitely varies depending on the size of your space, and at times, the larger the space, the harder it is to decorate. One of the hardest obstacles to tackle is a giant blank wall. Maybe it’s the overwhelming feeling of all of the square footage you need to cover, or it could be the fear of making a space look too cluttered or too sparse, but no matter what, that wall can easily become the dominant force in the space (good or bad). These are some design tips to show you how to decorate your biggest fear… or at least your biggest wall.
Color can definitely be your friend in this design challenge, and there are several different ways to use it. You can paint the large wall a dark color which will absorb some of the space and close in the room a tiny bit. This will also define this wall as your focal point, so you can’t stop at just paint, but it’s a great place to start. Another option would be to paint horizontal or vertical stripes across the entire wall. This will break up an otherwise vast space making it seem smaller. A third option with color is to section the wall off into three sections of colors with the outer sides painted a light neutral color and the middle band being a dark color or pattern. Here are some great examples of how color can really define a space:
Once you have the wall color and pattern taken care of, you are ready for the the next step, and once again, you have lots to choose from. Depending on how you want your space to feel you can keep everything clean and organized or mixed and eclectic. Neither way is right or wrong…it all depends on you and your personality. For a more eclectic approach, a frame gallery is perfect. You can use family photos or art you’ve collected. If you don’t have any of those that are gallery worthy, try framing fabric or wallpaper swatches. It’s a great way to add color and texture to your walls, and you can even mix them with your photos for a more eclectic mix.
Another option is to use large art or a large mirror. This is a much cleaner and more modern solution, but it will still achieve a beautiful outcome. Also, large mirrors can really brighten up a space with little natural light which is an added bonus.
Hope all of these ideas help you figure out how to decorate your large wall!
