This is my list of go-to store for all of my clients' projects | Homegrown Interiors
When I am shopping for my clients, I have my go to stores depending on their style, budget and needs. I am sure there are some of you out there that are ready to start decorating, but you just don’t know where to look. We all know about the basics, the Pottery Barns, West Elms, and Crate and Barrels of the world (which have their place in my searches, don’t get me wrong!), but to really get that well rounded and unique look, you aren’t going to find everything in one place. These stores cover a wide range of styles, prices ranges and products, and they will hopefully cover your entire project!

I am rating stores with a $-low budget, $$-mid range and $$$- for high end to help you navigate the list a little easier

Styling: The Basics

September 5, 2014 by Lizzie Filed Under: Inspiration, Save and Splurge Leave a Comment

Bookshelves are a great way to add storage, display your favorite things, warm up a nook, or  cozy up a large space. Large or small, this piece of furniture can be used in any room of your house. No matter what type of shelving you have in your house, they need to have some style and personality. Being such a universal piece can easily attract clutter. They can also seem too stiff, formal or overdone if not styled right. Here are three easy steps to give your bookshelves some serious style!

First Step

To get started, I like to start with stacks of books. There are two basic ways to display a group of books: vertical or horizontal. I like to mix it up and have a shelf with vertical books pushed to one side, another shelf with vertical books pushed to the other side, a few shelves with horizontal books stacked in the middle of a shelf, and if you have enough shelf space, you can mix the two and have a shelf or two with vertical books stacked next to a group of horizontal books. This picture is a great example how to stack books, and I love how they used similarly colored books (warm and cool) to make it even more eye catching. def7f4d1364bba160d9f383bc5abf25c-1

Second Step

The next step is to incorporate larger display items like frames and boxes. By scattering frames throughout the shelves rather than clumping them all together, you will be able to focus in on each picture more easily. It highlights the picture as well as makes the shelf look great. I love to play with scale here. On one shelf, you a larger frame paired with a smaller frame, and on another shelf, try putting just a single mid-sized frame. For boxes, my favorite way to display boxes is to put smaller ones on top of a stack of books. It’s a great way to get height on the shelf without needing one large item or a giant stack of books.

Third Step

Finally, you are left with smaller items that could be little keepsakes from family vacations, a small clock, a bud vase, or a little statue. I always save these for the end because they can be used anywhere that needs a little more love. Some shelves may feel a little empty or not have enough personality. These trinkets will fill those voids and by adding them in last, you will have a sense as to how many to display and when to stop. This will prevent you from creating a cluttered look. Less is more here. Try not to put a small item on every shelf, and don’t use more than 2 or 3 on any one shelf.

One thing to keep in mind through all of this is that balance is key. Make sure that each shelf has a visual weight equally dispersed. A big stack of books needs to be balance with 1 large frame, and possibly a smaller display piece. A collection a frames should be balanced with a small stack of books topped with a box. Also, lower shelves should visually feel heavier than higher shelves. Stacks of larger books will feel well placed lower, while delicate frames and thinner books want to be displayed up high. As long as each shelf is balanced, your overall look will feel cohesive and organized.

And finally, personalize these shelves. Think about how you and your family will be using them and make them work for you. If it is by the front door, you will probably want to create a little spot for mail and keys. If they are in the living room, you may want to include DVD’s or a place for remotes. The items that you use should reflect you and how you live. And don’t forget to add in bright pops your favorite colors!

Everyone has books and frames laying around the house, but the smaller display pieces are sometimes harder to come by. Click here to see some of my favorite little trinkets to help dress up your bookshelves and  sign up for my newsletter for access to great discounts on all of these items!

Save and Splurge: Klismos Chair

June 2, 2013 by Lizzie Filed Under: Save and Splurge Leave a Comment

The Klismos Chair is a greek inspired classic chair. I love how the clean lines of this chair fit into any contemporary space, and the curves soften up the overall look and feel to keep that inviting quality. These will add a lot of sophistication to your dining room without any stiffness. With these chairs, your dinner party will be a night to remember. To get this look, Global Views has a spectacular rendition of the the chair that also has a spectacularly high price tag of $1,998 per chair. If a drop of red wine fell on one of those chairs, I think I would have a heart attack. But, thankfully Restoration Hardware also has their version for only $229. That is still a pretty decent investment for a dining chair, if you ask me, but the chair could last a lifetime!

Save and Splurge

A laid back breakfast table with style is no easy feat. Most casual seating options lack luster and pizzazz, but these Everyday Side Chairs from Caracole have all the pop and fizz that you could want while keeping the room feeling cool, calm and casual. The only problem is that chairs with this much personality usually come with a hefty price tag. This side chair at Candelabra.com runs you $462 a chair, while the much more affordable West Elm Spoke Chair is only $299. You miss out on the fun scalloped back detail, but you can make up for that with dish ware, place settings, or anything else you want to spend that extra cash you’ve saved by going with the save option.

Save and Splurge

Round dining tables are the perfect solution to keep the conversation going all dinner long. They prevent ends from getting pulled into the own conversation, and without any head of the table, everyone feels comfortable and casual. Round tables are also a great solution to space issues. If you are short on square footage, a round dining table will give you more ways to pack in the guests without having to avoid corners. I love Global Views take on the round dining table with their Plank Table, but the price tag is a little hard to swallow. World Market to the rescue! Their Cooper Round Dining Table saves the day and the budget.

Look for Less

I love the simplicity of this living room. It’s classic, stylish and trendy all rolled into one. This room works so well because instead of adding pops of color around the space, they focus on shades and texture. They have every tone from black to white, and every texture from soft to course. A monotone space can quickly become boring, but by adding all of these different visual elements, this room pops. The genius of the design is that if you want to add color in at some point, you can easily change the entire look of the space by switching out the pillows, the ottoman seat cushions or rug with a colorful option. Do you love this room as much as I do? This online shopping list will help you bring this look to life in your own home!

Save and Splurge

It’s time to fall back in love with outdoor living, and these Emu Retrouve High Back Chairs are just the way to do it! I love the personality and style they bring to the party with their fun mix and match colors and playful lines without sacrificing any function. With their wire frame and small removable seat cushion, they can withstand any rain storm, and be party-ready in an instant. For most of us, the $1099 price tag is a little hard to spend on something that will have leaves, birds, and squirrels taking more advantage of them than you, and lucky for us, Kirkland’s Red Swirl Patio Chair. With a few different colors of spray paint and some simple outdoor seat cushions, you can easily recreate this fun and colorful backyard atmosphere without breaking the budget.

Meet Lizzie

My success as an eDecorator has come from years of experience. After receiving a degree in Interior Design from FIDM in Los Angeles, I have been continuously working within the residential interior design industry for the past 10 years. I have seen first hand what works, what doesn’t, and why. I have learned how to make the most of a budget, and most importantly, how to get that high end look without spending a fortune. Read More…
