Homegrown’s Expanding Family

March 30, 2014 by Lizzie Filed Under: Nurseries Leave a Comment

The Homegrown family is going to grow by one around May, and we are so excited to welcome Baby Boy Lipman into this crazy and wonderful world! We have been working frantically to get our very dated and rather unsafe house (that is also full of love!) ready for his impending arrival. Our house was built in the 70’s, and most likely not updated since then, so while we have a long way to go before this place is blog ready, we’ve made great strides toward our final goal! I’ll be posting pictures soon of the nursery, which is slowly coming together, but until then, I wanted to share my April’s Exclusive eDecorating Designs which are all about nurseries. With a baby on the way, the amount of new things you need and want can start to feel overwhelming. People keep telling me that you don’t need half of the stuff you think you do, but I’m not sure I’ve figured out which half could be cut out. It all seems very necessary. But, after talking to lots of moms, I have figured out what makes a nursery the most functional, and I have taken those tips and turned them into nursery eDecorating design that are not only beautiful but also extremely functional! These are some of my favorite products in the baby world, and when you sign up for my newsletter, you can receive special Homegrown pricing on anything you see below.

iDesign on a Dime- Nursery

How to decorate a nursery with high end style on a small budget

Tip #1:

The easiest way to save the most money is to focus on finding the big pieces of furniture for the least amount of money.

In this case, the crib, glider and dresser were the big ticket items. When shopping for furniture that comes with safety concerns, make sure you aren’t sacrificing quality over budget. In this case, I made sure to read all of the reviews I could find on the crib to make sure it was a solid piece of furniture. Another way I saved on furniture was by not buying a traditional changing table. Those can get very pricey and are too small to be practical long term. My solution was to buy a dresser that can be used long after your baby grows up, and I added a changing tray that fits on top of any dresser to make it a functional changing table.

Tip #2:

Spend a little more on the big impact items.

Figure out which items in your design will be the standouts, and allow yourself to spend a little more to get that look. The crib bedding is actually the exact same bedding that is in the inspirational photo, but the pillow was a similar one that I found for half the price on Etsy. I decided to also spend a little extra on the to get a softer feel without sacrificing that great natural fiber look. The rug I found was a blend of jute and chenille (among other fibers).

Tip #3:

Have your local hardware store color match high end paint colors.

I love Benjamin Moore paint colors. They are very high quality, and I highly recommend using a higher end brand when you want the colors to last. A nursery, on the other hand, is a room that you will most likely be painting over in the next few years. This opens up a great opportunity to save by having your local hardware store color match the high end colors in a lower end paint.

The Perfect Playroom

July 26, 2011 by Lizzie Filed Under: Nurseries Leave a Comment

A playroom is a tricky room to decorate because more than anything is to be functional, but you also want the room to be creative, imaginative, and don’t forget, cute. This room is also the perfect place for kids to express themselves, so you want the decor to reflect them and their interests. If they love cowboys and horses, you might not want to put spaceships everywhere. While the theme of the room can be left up to interpretation, there are some fundamental keys to making a playroom successful. One of the most important elements, if you ask me, is closed storage and tons of it! The more storage you have, the cleaner the room can appear. Storage doesn’t have to be bulky armoires or loads of closet space. Creative solutions to storage can sometimes be the focal point of a room.

Creating a seating area that can double as sleeping area is a great space saver, and it can add longevity to your room. This will take a child from toddlerhood through high school. Sticking with a neutral palette and adding in accent colors is also a great way to make sure your room stands the test of time. That dinosaur bed will only last a few years, but it can make sense, budget wise, if everything else around that piece is neutral. Then you will only be replacing one big piece of furniture over time instead of having to change everything. The walls are a great place to make bold choices. Paint and wall art are easy to change and make the room a lot more fun.

Chalkboard paint is a great way to make this room interactive and potentially educational. It’s fun to be able to draw on the walls and create your own adventure. Make sure they know that this is the ONLY room where drawing on the walls is acceptable. Could lead to big dangers in the rest of your house.

Also, a magnetic wall can be a great way to showcase your kids’ art, leave notes and reminders for the family, and just have more fun on the wall.

And most importantly, create a space where the whole family can relax and have fun!

Contemporary Girl’s Nursery

January 26, 2011 by Lizzie Filed Under: Nurseries Leave a Comment

My latest e-decorating client was a little baby girl named Emma Rose. Her parents wanted the nursery to fit in with the rest of their contemporary style house, but still be playful and young. We mixed some sophisticated patterns and a muted color palette with more playful details like the poms and a bird lamp. A lot of what we used will be able to stay in the room as Emma grows giving the design longevity.

My Latest Project: Safari Nursery

November 2, 2010 by Lizzie Filed Under: Nurseries 1 Comment

Here are some final shots of my latest project- a nursery! They were a little tight on space, so we had to do some creative space planning, but the room doesn’t feel like it’s missing anything. The bedding they had already picked out was safari themed, so I wanted to bring that in throughout the space without it feeling too much like a “theme”. Hope you like it…

My happy client!

Nursery Finds

September 27, 2010 by Lizzie Filed Under: Nurseries Leave a Comment

With some many of my friends expecting little ones,  the topic of decorating nurseries has come up often. Everyone has a vague idea of what they want, but shopping for it all is like learning a foreign language. I’ve come across some really great products and ideas that I wanted to share with all of you.  Some things are new and some are old, but they are all perfectly precious!

Artistic Living Spaces created the best themed kid’s room I’ve ever seen.

One of my favorite modern baby stores is Weego Baby here in Santa Monica. Their store always provides some eye candy for the window shoppers (my window shopping). Their home store Weego Home has been one of my favorites for a long time. It’s nearly impossible to walk out of there without drooling.

inally, Target is always a great stop for practically anything you need, but baby gear especially. Dwell Studio has created a line just for Target, and it’s just as cute as their main line. Again, their adult line is just as beautiful! Here’s there Target line

Meet Lizzie

I have seen first hand what works, what doesn’t, and why. I have learned how to make the most of a budget, and most importantly, how to get that high end look without spending a fortune. Read More…
