Decorating a Studio Apartment

April 5, 2013 by Lizzie Filed Under: Apartment Life, featured 2 2 Comments

I have always loved the charm of a great studio apartment. They are quaint, simple, and so easy to keep clean and organized. But, without a great plan of attack with you are decorating, they can feel small, chaotic, and like everyone is constantly hanging out in your bedroom.  The key to decorating a studio apartment successfully is to make every piece of furniture functional and beautiful, and in some cases, multi-functional. These tips will help you create a decorating plan of attack so that you can fall in love with your studio!

#1: Storage

Storage is one thing I have never found much of in a studio apartment, so furniture that can double as storage is very important. Look for a storage ottoman that can double as your coffee table. It’s always nice to put your feet up on something soft, and its great to have closed storage for blankets, sheets, and towels. Another great way to create storage is by finding a bed that has drawers underneath. That space tends to be extremely under-utilized by shoving things into hiding (which can get hidden from you as well and forgotten) or the space is just wasted. With drawers, everything you put in there is easily accessible.

#2 Multi-Use

When space is limited, the best way to gain square footage is by giving all of your furniture two jobs, or three if you can.  Depending on the layout, there are a few pieces that easily take on other jobs. A nightstand can easily double as your desk, dining chairs can also be accent chairs in the living room, and your dresser can also act as a tv console or a console table behind the sofa.

Kitchens in studio apartments rarely have enough countertop space. A great solution to that problem is the create an island that doubles as a dining table. Make sure the table and chairs are counter height, and you can use the space on the ends to hang pots and pans.

#3 Room Dividers

Just because you don’t have dividing walls doesn’t mean you can’t create them. A great way to separate your bedroom from the rest of the space is by using a room divider. They can double as a bookcase and/or TV cabinet, and they offer a great play to display art and bring in pops of color. By using a room divider, your studio will start to feel more like a great room and less like a bedroom.

Hopefully, with these tips, you will now love where you live!
